About Unlearn

What is Unlearn?

Unlearn is an online feminist organisation for women and girls in Iraq. We publish articles in Arabic and English, run free online learning circles and workshops, and help women find trusted support.

What does “unlearn” mean?

Many of the rules that hold women back were never laws of nature: we learned them at home, at school and from the people around us. To unlearn is to notice those lessons, question them, and choose which ones to keep.

Is Unlearn fully online?

Yes. Everything we do happens online: our website, social media, video calls and private group chats. You can take part from anywhere, using only your phone.

Is Unlearn linked to a political party or religious group?

No. We are independent. We are not affiliated with any political party, sect or armed group.

Who is behind Unlearn?

A small team of Iraqi women and volunteers. Some of us work under pen names for our safety, and we respect that choice for everyone who works with us.

Is feminism against men?

No. Feminism is about fairness: the same rights, dignity and choices for women as for men. Many men support that, and they are welcome to.

Taking part

How do I join an online learning circle?

Write to us through the contact form and we will send you the details of the next circle. Circles take place in a private video call or group chat with a small group of women.

Do I have to turn my camera on or use my real name?

No. You can keep your camera off, use a nickname, and only share what you are comfortable with. What is said in a circle stays in the circle.

How much does it cost?

Nothing. Our articles, learning circles and workshops are free.

Do I need any experience or knowledge of feminism?

No. Curiosity and respect are enough. Many women join us with questions, not answers.

I live outside Iraq. Can I take part?

Yes. Because everything is online, women from Iraq living anywhere in the world are welcome.

Can men get involved?

Our circles are for women only, but men can share our work, support us online and, most importantly, practise unlearning in their own lives.

How can I volunteer?

We need translators, designers, writers, social media helpers and circle hosts. All volunteering is done online, from home. Tell us what you would like to do through the contact form.

Can my organisation work with you?

Yes. We work with organisations, online communities and media on online workshops, campaigns and research. Write to us through the contact form.

Writing for Unlearn

Can I write for Unlearn?

Yes. Send us your idea in a few lines, in Arabic or English, through the contact form. We will reply and work on the text with you.

Will my name be published?

Only if you want it to be. You can use your full name, your first name only, or a pen name. Your safety comes first.

Do you edit the articles?

We help with editing and translation, and nothing is published until you have approved the final version.

Can I share or translate your articles?

Yes, please do. Our articles are free to share as long as you credit Unlearn and link back to the original.

Safety & privacy

Is it safe to contact you?

Yes. Messages are read only by our team and are never shared. You don’t have to give your name or email.

What is the Quick exit button?

The button at the top of every page takes you away from our website instantly, to a neutral page. You can also press Esc twice.

Do you track visitors?

No. We don’t use advertising or tracking cookies, and we don’t sell or share any data.

Can you help me if I am in danger?

We are not an emergency service. If you are in danger, contact local emergency services or someone you trust. You can also write to us, and we will try to connect you with trusted organisations.

Someone is threatening or blackmailing me online. What should I do?

It is not your fault. Don’t pay and don’t send anything more, save the evidence (screenshots with dates and usernames), report the account, and write to us for help.

Website & social media

Why is everything in Arabic and English?

So that Iraqi women can read in the language they are most comfortable with, and so our work can reach people outside Iraq too.

How do I switch language?

Use the English / العربية button at the top of every page. On an article, it takes you straight to the translation when there is one.

Where can I find you on social media?

Our accounts are linked at the bottom of every page. On Instagram, our highlights explain the words we use, how to stay safe, and how to reach us.

Can I suggest a word or a topic?

Yes, please. Tell us through the contact form which word you would like explained or what you would like us to write about.
