Resources

Words, books and practical tools to keep unlearning.

If you need help

If you are in immediate danger, contact local emergency services or someone you trust nearby. Unlearn is not an emergency service, but you can write to us privately and we will try to connect you with trusted organisations that offer legal, health and psychosocial support.

Team note (only you can see this): add verified hotline numbers and partner organisations for each governorate here. Double-check every number before publishing.

Browsing safely

  • Use the Quick exit button at the top of every page (or press Esc twice) to leave this site instantly.
  • Use a private or incognito window so this visit is not saved in your history.
  • If someone checks your phone, clear your browser history after visiting.
  • Turn on two-step verification for your email and social media accounts.

A small glossary

Words give us the power to name what is happening. Here are a few we use often.

Patriarchy

A social system in which men hold most of the power, in the family, in politics and in the economy, and in which that imbalance is treated as natural.

Consent

A free, informed and clear “yes” that can be taken back at any time. Silence, pressure or fear are not consent.

Gender-based violence

Harm done to someone because of their gender. It can be physical, sexual, psychological or economic, and it includes forced marriage and so-called “honour” violence.

Bodily autonomy

The right to make decisions about your own body, health and future without coercion.

Intersectionality

The idea that different forms of discrimination, because of gender, class, religion, ethnicity or disability, overlap and shape each person’s experience differently.

Emotional labour

The unseen work of managing everyone’s feelings, keeping the peace and remembering everything, which is so often expected of women and so rarely recognised.

  • Feminism Is for Everybody: bell hooks
  • The Hidden Face of Eve: Nawal El Saadawi
